What is a Fan Outlet Damper?

Fans are multifunctional in many aspects of industrial and manufacturing operations. They can provide circulation, a desirable breeze, heat regulation, and transfer airstreams to desired locations. Dampers allow fans to function more effectively, as they allow the air volume to be controlled. Fans could be equipped with a fan outlet damper or a fan inlet damper (or even both), each of which can aid the effectiveness of the fan by adding or removing system resistance. This allows the fan the ability to favorably adjust the airflow for a specific purpose. The fan outlet damper can cause the fan to generate more or less air without adjusting the fan speed or taxing the engine, since the engine can continue to run at the same constant speed even though the air volume is being adjusted.

Fan Outlet Damper Differences

There are two types of different blades that are most often used when installing a fan outlet damper. Parallel blades and opposed blades are the two options that are generally available. If the desired purpose of the fan outlet damper is to provide sensitive control in air volume for a relatively small range of change, parallel blades can provide the services appropriate for these conditions, as they allow specific changes in volume to occur from the range of 100% wide open to 75% wide open.

Opposed blades, on the other hand, allow the volume control to range from wide open until 25% wide open, allowing a greater change in volume to occur effectively. Opposed blades allow a fan outlet damper to provide volume control on a larger scale.

How Does a Fan Outlet Damper Work?

A fan outlet damper operates by adding resistance to the air stream, by employing the use of parallel and opposed blades. When a fan outlet damper changes from a wide open position to a partially closed position, the fan??s pressure curve is moved to a new point of operation. The fan??s performance follows the new pressure curve. Additionally, lower volumes of air are moved to the adjacent location.

When is Fan Outlet Damper Use Most Effective?

Fans, printing presses, pumps, conveyors, and other types of machines rely on electric motors to run. These motors are usually only capable of running at a single speed. This could be a problem if the machine is required to operate at different speeds. The installation of a fan outlet damper allows those changes to be made without adjusting the speed of the motor. Industrial fans are commonly equipped with a fan outlet damper in order to control and vary the airflow. Anybody who owns a building and requires the ability to control the volume of air or other gases could benefit from the installation of a fan outlet damper on any industrial fans that are in use. Of course, the fan outlet damper would be the most beneficial if the concept of parallel blades and opposed blades was carefully considered to provide the most effective air-flow solution.
